Health benefits
Red Prince apples are an excellent way for adults to achieve the 7-10 servings1 of fruits and vegetables recommended by Canada’s Food Guide. One Red Prince apple (a 180 gram portion) is considered:
- a good source of vitamin C, essential for healthy skin and gums and for playing a role in improving immune system functioning. Its antioxidant properties help protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals and may reduce the risks of cancer, heart disease and the progression of age-related macular degeneration.
- a good source of fibre, which promotes regularity and may contribute to weight maintenance. High fibre diets have also been linked to lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and diverticular disease.
- a rich source of phytochemicals, which has been linked with reduced risk of some cancers, cardiovascular disease, asthma and diabetes.
- a source of pectin, shown to help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol. In fact, people who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 per cent .
- to have a low glycemic index(GI) rating of 40. A diet that is low in GI helps stabilize blood sugar levels and can prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
