Party Etiquette
Whether you prefer black-tie champagne parties or family-room pizza parties, being the host can sometimes be overwhelming if you don’t remember the basics. As the host, take at least five minutes for yourself before guests are due to arrive. Opening your door looking fresh and happy is the best way to be sure your guests feel welcome. Here are some great tips:
- Invitations – Provide who, what, where, when, and why on the invitation as well as directions, parking and any other details your guests should know.
- Location - Guests want to enjoy your home and it should be easy for them to find a place to sit and relax. When children are invited, have planned activities and a play area.
- Creature comforts – Have a designated coat area, extra socks, slippers and welcome mats for wet boots. (You may also need to prep for guests who will insist on smoking outdoors).
- Seating arrangements – When a sit down dinner is possible and it is necessary to separate feuding guests, use place cards.
- Supplies – Stock the bathrooms with clean hand towels, tissues, an air freshener, toilet paper, soap and hand cream.
- Food – Provide a good selection of food and beverages in sufficient quantity. Ask guests to advise about dietary restrictions. You’ll also need plates, cutlery, napkins, trays and serving pieces.Â
- Host – Hang coats, circulate and introduce people, make conversation, take drink orders, replenish food items and be aware. Always ensure your guests do not drink and drive.
