Respecting Elders

Aging is an inescapable fact of life.  Our elders and other people we meet should be treated with the same respect and consideration that we would want them to extend to us.

Here are some ways to show respect to our elders:

  • Always stand to greet an elder.
  • Address an elder, other than our parents, by using an honourific such as Mr. Mrs. Ms. before their last name unless they give permission to do otherwise.
  • When making an introduction, say the name of the elder first.
  • Offer an elder a seat on public transit.
  • Hold a door for an elder, help them with their chair, coat or packages and offer any other assistance as required, just as you would for anyone needing help.
  • Show gratitude when an elder helps you.
