Growing Practices

Ontario Red Prince apples are grown in a uniquely sustainable and innovative fashion and include the following practices:

    • High density orchards: unlike the traditional method of planting 300-500 trees per acre, this European inspired growing technique involves planting over 1,000 trees per acre. Trees grown in this fashion are kept small and are pruned regularly. Keeping the trees small and narrow allows workers to remain on the ground or on the picking platform while collecting the apples, increasing the rate at which they are picked and decreasing the occurrence of workplace accidents.  Regular pruning keeps few branches on the trees; this results in the apples reaping equal exposure to the sun and improving the quality of the fruit.

  • Eco sprayers: these sprayers reduce the amount of chemicals employed by 30 per cent when used on their own.  When used in combination with the high density planting system, as is the case with the Red Prince, eco sprayers reduce pesticide application by 75 per cent.
  • Drip irrigation: this method of applying slow, steady and precise amounts of water and nutrients to the apple trees results in water conservation and allows the apples to grow at a faster rate.
  • Precision planting: guided by GPS technology, precision planting increases orchard yield by preventing dual planted areas resulting in misappropriation of moisture and nutrients.
  • Pre-sorting and grading technologies: these technologies ensure that only the best
